Peer Review and Editorial Practice

Preliminary Check
Once an article is received at the editorial office, it undergoes a preliminary check by the editor-in-chief of the journal as well as editorial office. The editorial office checks each manuscript for plagiarism and this scrutiny is done via authentic software; hence every single plagiarized line gets detected. The editorial office also evaluates the manuscripts to check if they are prepared as per the Guideline for Authors. Meanwhile, the editor in chief of the journal goes through the manuscript or its abstract to check if it falls under the scope of the journal and if it is of sufficient quality to be published in the journal. After preliminary scrutiny, the article can be 1) processed further for peer review, 2) sent to authors for revision and resubmission or 3) rejected. Preliminary scrutiny is usually completed within 10 days after submission of the manuscript.

Expert Peer Review
When a manuscript is approved after preliminary checking, it is processed for peer review which is mostly supervised by the editor in chief and handled by the editorial office. Peer review can either be single or double blind depending on the specific journal’s policy. Each manuscript is sent to reviewers who are experts in the related field and have no association with the authors of the manuscript under review. EiC of the journal may suggest potential reviewers for a manuscript either from the editorial board of the journal or outside the editorial board. Peer review process is usually completed within a month after preliminary scrutiny and approval.

Revisions and Editorial Decision
After collecting feedback from at least two reviewers, a letter of acceptance or rejection is sent to the authors along with the reviewer’s assessment. Authors are either asked to revise their manuscripts as per the reviewer’s comments or informed about the rejection of manuscript. Names of reviewers are not disclosed to the authors. If revisions are minor, the article is accepted after revision. However, if there is major revision, the revised article together with rebuttal letter from the author is sent back to the reviewers for rechecking. There can be only two rounds of major revisions after which the final decision is taken for the manuscript.

Author Appeals
Authors are permitted to appeal against the editorial decision for their manuscript simply by sending an email to the managing editor. The managing editor will arrange a reconsideration of the manuscript by a board member of the journal. The reevaluation result will then be forwarded to the Editor in Chief of the journal for a final decision.
